Dennis Fire Station #2

Dennis, MA

17,000 ft2

This project began as a feasibility study that helped the town to figure out what they needed, decide on a new location for the new building, navigate the politics of the town and the project, and establish a financial plan for moving the project forward. After the completion of the feasibility study, we were fortunate enough to be selected by the town a second time to design their new facility in earnest and take the project through construction. The building is made up of three volumes, a two-story shingle cladded volume for admin services and living quarters, a double height brick volume for the apparatus bays and associated spaces and a single story shingle cladded volume to be used as a training room for the fire fighters and as a community room for the entire town.

The two story volume includes dispatch, offices, and a fitness room on the first floor. On the second floor, there are seven bunk rooms, locker rooms, and a kitchen/dayroom area with exposed timber trusses. The apparatus bay volume includes three double loaded bays with bi-fold doors in the front of the building and overhead doors in the back. This volume also includes a mezzanine area for storage directly connected to the living quarters. The training room/community room can host up to 60 people and similarly to the kitchen/day room area, features an exposed wood ceiling with timber trusses.
